American Sailing Association Classes Offered:
Basic Keelboat - BKB (ASA 101 Standard): This is a four-day introductory sailing course. No prior boating skills or navigation skills are required. Over the 32 hours of this class, each student will learn to sail a 22-foot Capri in light to moderate wind and sea conditions on the San Joaquin River. Classes are small with a maximum of 3 students, allowing for plenty of experience learning to pilot the boat as skipper and as crew. Classroom instruction makes up about 6 hours of this course. It is recommended that students read the text prior to starting the class in order to gain as much benefit as possible. A written test and a practical on-the-water test are given at the end of the class. With successful completion of the tests, the student will receive Basic Keelboat ASA certification.

Basic Coastal Cruising - BCC (ASA 103 Standard): Over the 24 hours of this class, each student will learn to cruise safely in local waters under moderate wind and sea conditions. Students will learn to cruise as both skipper and crew on a 30 foot auxiliary powered sailboat. A written test and a practical on-the-water test are given at the end of the class. With successful completion of the tests, the student will receive Basic Coastal Cruising ASA certification.

Bareboat Charter - BBC (ASA 104 Standard): This 3 day/2 night liveaboard course is an advanced cruising class, designed for students who are interested in bareboat chartering. Students will be trained to act as skipper and crew of a 35-foot auxiliary powered sailboat in coastal waters. The class takes place in San Francisco Bay, and the two nights will be spent at anchor. The class includes instruction on boat systems and maintenance procedures. Students will learn how to provision for a cruise, and will be doing some cooking aboard. With successful completion of this class, the student will receive Bareboat Charter ASA certification.

Coastal Navigation - CN (ASA 105 Standard): No prior boating skills or navigation skills are required to take this classroom class. Upon completion of the class, students will be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. With successful completion of the tests, the student will receive Coastal Navigation ASA certification.

Advanced Coastal Cruising - ACC (ASA 106 Standard): Upon successful completion of this class, students will be able to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in coastal and inland water, in any weather. This is a four day, three night class.
Prerequisites: Bareboat Charter - BBC (ASA 104) and Coastal Navigation - CN (ASA 105)

Docking Endorsement - DE (ASA 118 Standard): This 2 day course builds on basic skills introduced in ASA 103 and 104, developing techniques for handling single engine boats in tight quarters as well as methods of securing and boats to docks in a variety of conditions.

Weather Endorsement - WE (ASA 119 Standard): Understand and demonstrate the proper use of weather information in planning and adapting navigation during local and passage-making voyages. Demonstrate the ability to use both the latest technological tools as well as traditional maritime skills to forecast weather conditions.

Radar Endorsement - RE (ASA 120 Standard): The ASA radar course teaches safe, efficient use of small-craft radar for piloting, chart navigation, and collision avoidance, including radar principles and practical matters of radar operation. A realistic PC based radar simulator is used in the course to illustrate radar measurements.
